Drawing on Walls

Sometimes our imaginations are sparked by a visual where words fail us. Think about when communities plan and imagine their futures, when teams consider the possible outcomes for their projects, when groups create maps to track their progress. These are all opportunities to use visuals to engage and deepen community dialogue. In this session we’ll touch the paper, play with the pens, and loosen up our drawing muscles. Warning: You will stretch beyond the confines of typing on a keyboard!

Michelle Laurie is a consultant working in sustainable development, collaboration and learning.  She has over ten years experience helping organizations and partnerships in Canada and abroad communicate as well as improve the way they create and share knowledge. She brings innovative ideas to projects and processes and is well-known for creatively engaging with the communities she works with.  She has been successfully incorporating visual thinking into her work including participatory graphic exercises and visual aids. She lives in the mountain community of Rossland tucked away in the Kootenay region of B.C. Sylvia Currie is client services manager at BCcampus (bccampus.ca), curriculum development and academic growth division, and spends her days working with people who want to learn from other people. Her role includes supporting leaders of several communities of practice across the British Columbia post-secondary education system, stewarding two communities for educational practitioners, and coordinating online and on-ground workshops, conferences, and a variety of other events. She became interested in graphic recording and facilitation by taking workshops with Nancy White (http://www.fullcirc.com) both at past Northern Voice conferences and in Rossland at a 2-day immersion co-hosted with Michelle Laurie.  Sylvia is not an artist however her enthusiasm for the craft is great!
